Your Back - Stretch It to Strengthen It

Our backs are the most widely abused and used muscles in our bodies. We twist it, turn it, bend it, lift with it and constantly use our back muscles. In fact, you don’t even think about all the abuse this part of our body takes until you feel the pain. Then all of a sudden, you know exactly how important our backs are. Even just a little back pain can put a crimp in your daily activities.

So take care of this critical body part and strengthen those muscles. Back stretching exercises are one way to help tone the muscles and build back strength. Not only does stretching help build and strengthen your back muscles, but it keeps these muscles loose and ready to take on the daily abuse we give it. Here are a couple of back stretches you can do to give your back the break it deserves.

Lower Back Stretching Exercise – Pelvic Tilt

This stretch is a great one to do in the morning to really wake up the back and get it prepared for the day’s activities.

1. Lie on the ground with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor.

2. Put your arms out to your sides.

3. Now slowly arch your back keeping your butt and your shoulders on the ground.

4. Hold this stretch for a count of 30 to 60.

5. Repeat this several times and remember to breathe.

Upper Back Stretching Exercise – Heels over Head

You will go head over heels for this stretching exercise. It’s a great stretch for the upper back but will make you feel a bit like a contortionist.

1. Lie down flat on an exercise or yoga mat.

2. Lift your legs and back off the mat and bring your feet behind your head touching your toes to the floor. If this is too much, just bring your legs back as far as you can and feel the stretch.

3. Place your hands on your lower back for extra support.

4. Hold this stretch for a count of 15 to 30.

5. Repeat several times.

These two stretches will get you on your way to strengthening your back and minimizing back pain and injury. You should include several additional back stretches as well as back strengthening exercises in your weekly workout routines.
