Understanding Body Mass Index
Body mass index, or BMI, is a term many have heard but may not know what it is or what it is used for. To put it simply, BMI is a number that results from a calculation using a person's height and weight. The results from a BMI calculator is used as a screening for potential weight issues and excess body fat. How to Calculate BMI The BMI calculation is the same for adults and children but the results are analyzed differently for children. The calculation uses only the height and weight of a person. See below for the formula used to calculate a person's body mass index. US Measurement Calculation weight(lb) / [height(inches)]squared X 703 Metric Measurement Calculation weight(kg) / height(m)squared These simple calculations are what will determine which category you fall into. Results of the BMI Calculator Using the above calculation, the results would fall into one of 4 categories; underweight (below 18.5), normal (18.5 - 24.9), overweight (25.0 - 29.9) or obese (30.0 +). These results do not automatically mean a person is at risk for excess body fat. For instance, if a person was extremely muscular the results may be misleading. Muscle is more dense and therefore if a person was extremely muscular their results may be in the overweight category. However, they are probably not at risk for excess body fat. However, if a person falls into the obese category they are probably at risk for excess body fat. How the Results are Used The results of a BMI calculator are use simply as a screening tool. Depending on the results, additional tests may need to be conducted to determine if a person is at risk for excess body fat. The most common additional test is a body fat "skin fold" test. Your doctor may run additional tests to check blood pressure, cholesterol levels and blood sugar levels to see if you are at risk for certain diseases. If you find your BMI calculation results are in the overweight or obese category you will want to look for ways to lose weight, shed excess body fat and start exercising. |
