Making your Recipe a Weight Watchers Recipe
By Julie Barros
Weight Watchers is by far one of the most successful weight loss plans available today. They have been around for over 40 years with hundreds of thousands of success stories. Although their plan has changed over time from their “Quick Start” plan to their current “Points” system, the basis behind all of these plans has remained the same – healthy eating for a healthier you. Although the Weight Watchers points system has made it easier for people to track the weight loss value of the foods they eat, you may have some gaps in the information available to you. For example, you have a one of a kind recipe that was passed down to your grandmother, mother and now to you. This is a favorite dish that your family wants at least once a week. The problem is you are guessing at the total points because this is a one of a kind recipe. Although you may be able to estimate the points, wouldn't it be nice to turn this into one of your favorite Weight Watchers recipes. With just a bit of information, some mathematical calculations and a calorie calculator you can determine the WW points for your recipe. Here' how. Step 1 – Know your Ingredients First step is to have all your ingredients written down. If you have altered the recipe to make it healthier make sure you adjust your list accordingly. For instance, if you are using applesauce instead of vegetable oil, this will make a difference in the total nutritional values you will calculate for your recipe. Jot all the ingredients down in a spreadsheet making the next steps easier. Step 2 – Get the Nutritional Information In order to determine the points you need 3 things – calories, total fat grams and total fiber. These are the components used to calculate Weight Watchers points. Use an online calorie calculator of find a book that lists the calories by food items. Gather up all the calories, fat and fiber for each ingredient. If your recipe calls for 4 cups of flour, then get the total for all four cups. We will break this down by serving size later. Plug in all the information in your spreadsheet and then get your grand totals for the recipe. Step 3 – Divide and Conquer Time to divide these totals to get a per serving size nutritional information. If your recipe makes 4 servings, then divide the calories, fat and fiber by 4. This will give you the nutrition information per serving. You will need this to determine the points per serving. Step 4 – Getting to the Point Now it's time to get the Weight Watchers points per serving. To do this you can use an online WW calculator or do the math yourself. In order to do the math yourself you need to know the formula for calculating the points. Here it is; x = Calories per serving / 50 y = Total fat per serving / 12 z = Total fiber (up to 4 max) / 5 Weight Watchers Points = (x+y)=z There you have it, all the information and steps you need to turn your family secret recipes into your favorite Weight Watchers recipe. |
