Fad Diets - Diet Miracles or Dieters Nightmare?
By Julie Barros
Fad diets come and go and each year there seems to be a new wave of some fancy new trending diet. With the obesity rate continuing to rise, it’s easy to see why so many new ways to lose weight are introduced each year. However, with all the choices it’s a dieter’s nightmare to know which of the latest trends are actually worth a second look. As with anything in life, the more informed you are the better your choices will be. So before trying this latest and greatest diet pill, weight loss drink or trendy diet of the stars, do your homework. Here are some quick reviews of some of these newest diet plans that may or may not be the right one for you. Fad Diet #1 – Skinny Vegan Diet This plan is designed for the almost anorexic models wanna be. As the name suggests, it is a vegan plan. This in itself is not a bad thing and if becoming a vegetarian is your goal, then you may get some pointers from this plan. However, the plan itself has very few food choices. In fact, there are more foods on the banned list than the allowed list. With this plan you are more likely to feel like you are starving and will leave you wanting more. Most people do not last long on this food restricted diet trend. Fad Diet #2 – The Morning Banana Diet This one mimics the old Grapefruit diet. With the banana being their “super food” you can literally go bananas (or crazy) with this latest craze. There are only 2 simple rules to this plan. Rule number 1 – eat as many bananas as you want in the morning. Rule number 2 – drink warm water with your bananas. Beyond these two rules, anything goes. This means you could eat your Big Mac for lunch and a full pizza for dinner. Although this type of diet may seem easy to follow and tempting, chances are it won’t work. There is no one super food, and although bananas are healthy, it won’t make up for the other foods you eat during the day. So chock this one up to a dieting nightmare. Fad Diet #3 – Flat Belly Diet Who wouldn’t be enticed to try out this latest craze? We all want that all illusive flat stomach and six pack abs. But does the name deliver the promise? Well this diet trend is based on a 1,600 calories per day and has a Mediterranean flare. Their plan focuses on foods that help reduce belly fat by introducing MUFAs with each meal. MUFA, or monounsaturated fats, are what is believed to help minimize fat in your belly. In the first phase dieters include 2 liters of the “Sassy” drink to help with bloating and constipation. The foods seem healthy and the calories seem reasonable. However, to set the same calorie limit for everyone doesn’t make sense. Some people may need more and others would need less. Although the concept seems to make sense, experts are not convinced that any diet can target belly fat specifically. All in all, this one seems to “weight” towards a fad diet but there may be some merit worth taking a second look at this one.
