Eating Healthy can be Simple
By Julie Barros
With today's society going on a health craze, more and more people are trying to eat healthier. The benefits of eating healthy go way beyond weight loss. Adopting a healthier lifestyle can ward off many diseases and illnesses like lowing cholesterol, minimizing risk of heart disease, preventing diabetes or stabilizing blood sugar levels and much more. Unfortunately many people think of eating healthy as a sacrifice to good taste. But your food doesn't have to be bland nor does it have to be a specialized organic food that costs an arm and a leg. Simple changes to the way you eat today can get you on the road to eating healthier and feeling better. Eating Healthy Tip #1 Go Lean! When selecting your meats always think lean. The leaner the better as you will be reducing your fat intake by switching to leaner cuts of meats. For instance, instead of using ground hamburger for your next meal opt for lean ground turkey. The leaner cuts of meat may cost a bit more but is well worth the price for your health. Eating Healthy Tip #2 Go Natural! Foods in their natural state offer the most nutritional value (more bang for your buck so to speak). A tomato will offer more nutritional value and fewer calories versus tomato juice. So where you can, pick foods that are natural like your veggies and fruits. Not only will you get more vitamins and minerals they taste great and will make you feel fuller so that you eat less of other foods and lose weight. Eating Healthy Tip #3 Go Whole! Even though natural is the best there are certain food items that you just can't pick from a tree or the ground. In these cases, select foods that are processed with whole grains versus processed flour. Use whole wheat breads and pastas and eat whole grain cereals. These foods are higher in dietary fiber, vitamins and minerals and have a hearty taste. Eating Healthy Tip #4 Go Sugarless! Although eliminating sugars all together is near impossible, as fruits have a natural sugar (glucose), you want to avoid processed sugar as much as possible. Foods like cakes, cookies, candies, etc. are generally made with processed sugar. Processed sugar is high in calories and provides no nutritional value. These empty calorie foods add up quickly and can make it impossible to lose weight. Eating Healthy Tip #5 Go Wild! No I don't mean go crazy and eat anything. What I mean is make your food selections varied. You need over 40 different nutrients each day and no single food item or food group can provide all these nutrients. So choose a variety of different foods so that you get the proper vitamins and minerals. By adding variety you are also keeping your taste buds satisfied and keeping your body healthy. Although these are just a handful of quick, simple steps to eating healthy, by making just these little changes you will be headed towards a healthier lifestyle and a healthier you. |
