Calorie Shifting for Weight Loss

Calorie shifting is all about altering your calories from day to day or meal to meal in order to keep your metabolism guessing. This method, sometimes referred to as a zig-zag diet, is one of the latest crazes for losing weight fast.

There are two basic methods of shifting your calories. One is a day to day shifting while the other is shifting from meal to meal.

When shifting calories on a day to day basis you would still consume the proper allotted calories for weight loss within the week. However, each day would total a different calorie intake amount. For instance, if one day you consumed 1,400 calories the next may only be 800 calories. The third and 4th day might be 2,000 calories and 1,000 calories. The idea is to never let your metabolism get used to a certain amount of calorie consumption (or available fuel). This is in turn suppose to keep your metabolism revved up for a higher calorie burn and faster weight loss.

The other method of calorie shifting is altering the types of calories you consume from meal to meal. When zig-zagging calories by meal you may have a high protein, low carb breakfast one day and then the next you have a high fiber, high carb breakfast.

Or you may have only 200 calories for breakfast, 600 calories for lunch and 400 calories for dinner. Each meal would be a different amount of calories within the day or each meal would consist of a different source of calories from day to day.

Shifting calories, or zig-zagging, is not a low calorie diet or any crazy foods but rather a method of altering the proper calorie intake across days or meals. Although this method may work for some people, others may find it difficult to maintain the “low” calorie days or meals and find that they are too hungry or crave the wrong foods.

So before you decide if this is the best weight loss method for you, be sure you can withstand the zig-zag cravings or hunger pains. Keep in mind the proper way to lose weight is to consume fewer calories than you eat – even if your calories are consistent across the days and meals.
